Preparing for the heating season

Annually, with the onset of the heating season, there is a sharp increase in fires related to violations of fire safety rules during the operation of stove heating. To prevent such fires, the Ministry of Emergency Situations reminds of the need to inspect the condition of stoves and immediately eliminate detected defects, and also offers for your attention a list of basic fire safety requirements for the installation and operation of stove heating.

It is worth knowing about two necessary "accessories". A hearth mat will help prevent accidentally dropped coals from setting your house on fire, and its size should be at least 50x70 cm. You also need to remember about the correct use of the "yushka" – the damper, which, if forgotten, can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.

When lighting a fire, use only "natural" materials: wood chips, birch bark, sawdust. Flammable and combustible liquids can simplify not only the process of lighting but also the sudden ignition of your house.

Place the "heart of the home" at least one and a half meters away from furniture and other combustible materials. Drying clothes on a hot stove is also a bad idea, as it serves as excellent kindling for your wooden floor.

It is best not to leave a burning stove unattended. Remember that this rule applies to all "heating" devices – heaters, radiators. Keep an eye on the firebox doors; if they are open, it's a recipe for an evening "with a spark."

Prematurely closing the stove damper can also lead to carbon monoxide poisoning, which has no color or smell and is formed during all types of combustion. This is precisely why you should finish heating the stove at least two to three hours before going to bed. At the same time, always make sure that the coals have completely burned out.
