Lukashenko on the selection of candidates for academicians and corresponding members of the National Academy of Sciences: no nepotism or mutual cover-ups

Clear criteria must be established for the selection of candidates for academicians and corresponding members of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. This was stated by President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko on July 30 at a meeting with the working group for analyzing the activities of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, as reported by a BELTA correspondent.

The process of electing members of the Academy of Sciences is currently underway. The President emphasized that the significance of scientific developments for the state is the cornerstone of their selection criteria. The presence of one's own school that attracts young people to science is also important. "If there are no successors to ideas, no continuity – then there is no scientist," noted Alexander Lukashenko.

"I fully support the proposals of the scientists themselves that clear criteria for selecting candidates for academicians and corresponding members must be established. No nepotism or mutual cover-ups, which our sphere often suffers from," said the head of state.

Then, according to him, elections will be held in accordance with the updated charter of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and the regulations on elections. "When strengthening the pool of academicians and corresponding members, one should proceed from whether their real contribution to the national economy is sufficient. Are our scientists at the forefront of solving strategic economic and social problems?" the President oriented.
