Lukashenko takes part in the SCO summit in Astana

President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko is taking part in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit, BELTA correspondent reports.

Alexander Lukashenko arrived at the Palace of Independence in Astana, where he was welcomed by the summit host, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

The Head of State will take part in the meeting of the Council of Heads of SCO Member States, where a decision on Belarus's membership in this international organisation is expected to be approved. In his speech at the summit, the Belarusian leader will address the most significant areas of the SCO's work and the contribution Belarus is ready to make to solving common tasks.

The participants of the meeting of the Council of Heads of State will discuss issues of further improving the work of the integration association in order to strengthen and deepen multilateral cooperation in new conditions, and will consider current international and regional issues in the SCO region.

In general, the agenda includes more than two dozen various decisions and statements by the heads of state, which, among other things, concern the initiative "On Global Unity for a Just World and Harmony," the draft development strategy of the SCO until 2035, improving the organisation's activities, cooperation in economic development, investment, finance and energy, in the field of ecology and environmental protection, information security, as well as in the areas of combating terrorism and extremism, and fighting drug trafficking.

In Astana on the same day, with the participation of the President of Belarus, a "SCO plus" meeting will be held with the participation of leaders of observer states, honorary guests and heads of international organisations. The theme of the meeting will be "Strengthening multilateral dialogue - striving for sustainable peace and development."
