Lukashenko has approved the submission of a bill to the House of Representatives on the suspension of the CFE Treaty

President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko has agreed to submit to the House of Representatives of the National Assembly the draft law "On the Suspension of the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe". This was reported to BELTA by the press service of the Belarusian leader.

This treaty was ratified by Belarus and entered into force in 1992. It provides for the limitation of aggregate levels of conventional armaments and equipment in five main categories (tanks, armored combat vehicles, artillery, attack helicopters, and combat aircraft), as well as mechanisms for verifying compliance with obligations (information exchange and inspections).

The draft law provides for the suspension of the CFE Treaty, but does not mean Belarus's withdrawal from it or the cessation of internal procedures related to its implementation within the Armed Forces.

Belarus fully fulfills its obligations under the treaty, including strictly adhering to the established maximum levels of armaments, military equipment, and personnel of the Armed Forces.

Nevertheless, in August 2022, the Czech Republic, and in March 2023, Poland decided not to implement the treaty in relation to Belarus.

In November 2023, the North Atlantic Council of NATO issued a statement on the intention of the treaty's participating member states of the alliance to suspend its operation. The Russian Federation has also withdrawn from the CFE Treaty.

The suspension of the treaty by NATO member states and their allies effectively means its cessation of functioning.
