Lukashenko: Control over the National Bank's work will be strengthened

Oversight of the National Bank's operations will be strengthened. Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko announced this while hearing a report on the banking system's performance and measures taken to support foreign trade activities, as reported by a BELTA correspondent.

"When I appointed the Deputy Head of the Administration (referring to the appointment of Alexander Egorov as Deputy Head of the Administration of the President of Belarus. - BELTA note), I already said that this is a person with good knowledge in the field of finance and banking. And it will be easier for us to communicate in the Administration with the National Bank, with specialists, because we are on the same wavelength. We studied at the same universities. We are involving the State Control Committee in this," Alexander Lukashenko said.

"As you understand, Pavel Vladimirovich (Chairman of the Board of the National Bank Pavel Kallaur. - BELTA note), the National Bank cannot be outside of control. Control is exercised by the President, and you have probably noticed that in connection with the appointment of new individuals to the financial and economic bloc, this control will be strengthened," the President added.

At the same time, Alexander Lukashenko emphasized that this does not mean that the National Bank's operations will be hindered in any way. "It is mainly performing its functions. As the economic results of the past year show, in a difficult situation related to pressure from unfriendly Western states on Belarus, the economy is coping. This means that the government and the National Bank are coping. But this does not mean that there are no problems in this regard. We will discuss these problems frankly, honestly, without shifting blame onto someone else," the Belarusian leader noted.
