Lukashenko spoke in favor of strengthening the practical training of doctors: only on-the-job internships
President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, at a meeting on current healthcare issues, advocated for strengthening the practical training of medical professionals, according to a BELTA correspondent.
As Irina Abelskaya, Chief Physician of the Republican Medical Center of the Presidential Affairs Directorate of the Republic of Belarus, who led the interdepartmental working group, noted, during inspections, the group encountered an insufficient professional level of some healthcare facility employees. One of the reasons for this, in her opinion, is the formal and indifferent educational process at the postgraduate education level and the training of specialists in medical universities.
"So, the universities and BelMAPO are not working well?" the President clarified.
"It is impossible to say unequivocally that they are working poorly, of course. Much here depends on the motivation of students and doctors who attend courses, and on the frequency of these courses," Irina Abelskaya replied. According to her, the issue of revising and updating specialist training programs and knowledge control is acute. "Probably, there is not a single specialist who has undergone training or advanced training courses who has received an unsatisfactory grade or has been dismissed based on the results of a credit or exam upon completion of the courses. The same applies to medical university students, especially those admitted through targeted training," she noted.
It is necessary to strengthen the practical training of specialists as well, Irina Abelskaya emphasized. "It is impossible to learn modern technologies, which are supported by the purchase of expensive medical equipment, if you just stand at the surgical table and watch," she said. "Only the practice of practical skills. And we hope that in the near future, the republican simulation and attestation center will finally be introduced, which will allow our specialists to practice practical skills."
"The training of practical healthcare specialists should be conducted in educational scientific and practical centers, where fresh ideas and knowledge keep pace with modern theoretical and practical skills. And we need to bring back on-the-job training. It used to exist. Today, there is no such legalized form of professional development," the Chief Physician pointed out.
"I would say: only on-the-job training," stated Alexander Lukashenko. "There will be both theory and practice, because, roughly speaking, no one knows more about transplantology, neither in theory nor in practice, than Rummo (Oleg Rummo - Director of the Minsk Scientific and Practical Center for Surgery, Transplantology and Hematology. - BELTA's note). I'm referring to 'Rummo' in general. He has a team of guys there who know more theoretically and practically (in this field of medicine than anyone else. - BELTA's note)," the President emphasized. "Are you gathering them in a school or student audience and starting to lecture there? Who can talk about transplantology better than Rummo's team?"
