Caution: carbon monoxide!

Carbon monoxide is one of the main combustion products of almost all known combustible materials. Due to its composition and properties, carbon monoxide poisoning is a cause of death when using heating appliances and water heaters.

Carbon monoxide is formed during the combustion of natural gas. It has neither smell nor color. Carbon monoxide easily binds with hemoglobin in the blood. When the air contains 0.04% carbon monoxide, approximately 30% of the blood forms a chemical compound with carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide is a highly toxic gas; being in a room with only 0.5% carbon monoxide in the air for 5 minutes is life-threatening!

Inhaling air containing only 0.1% carbon monoxide leads to fatal poisoning in less than 3 hours. If there is no draft in the chimney, the carbon monoxide produced by the flame enters the room. The draft in the chimney can be checked with a lit match flame (only if there is no gas smell):

the flame is drawn into the chimney – there is a draft;

the flame deviates from the chimney – there is no draft.

Before turning on gas appliances that vent combustion products into the chimney, make sure there is no gas smell, open a ventilation window, and ensure the undercut at the bottom of the door allows for air intake. If there is a draft, turn on the gas appliance according to the instructions. 3-5 minutes after turning on the appliance, check the draft again.

Remember that it is forbidden to: use faulty gas appliances, turn them on if the safety automation is faulty or if there is no draft in the smoke and ventilation ducts, attempt to repair faults yourself, allow individuals who have not undergone safety training or who are under the influence of alcohol or drugs to operate the appliance.

Toxic substances contained in combustion products enter rooms and cause poisoning and death.

We remind you that, in accordance with the Rules for the Use of Gas in Everyday Life, owners of apartments and houses where heating and water heating gas equipment is installed are obliged to annually provide an Act of Suitability of Smoke and Ventilation Ducts to the gas supply organization.

It is necessary for specialists performing installation and commissioning work to conduct user training with a corresponding entry in the equipment passport.

We draw special attention to the fact that, in order to prevent accidents, it is recommended to carry out installation and maintenance of gas-consuming equipment, heating and water supply systems only by specialized organizations.
