Statistical Review of Families in Vitebsk Region for the International Day of Families

International Day of Families is celebrated annually worldwide on May 15.

In 2023, 6,249 marriages were registered in the Vitebsk region, of which 5,057 were concluded in urban areas and 1,192 in rural areas. The average age of marriage was 29.1 years for men and 26.9 years for women.

Interestingly, last year, 6,001 Belarusian citizens and 6,074 Belarusian female citizens formed families in the region, as well as 133 men and 123 women who are citizens of the Russian Federation. In addition, 115 foreign male citizens and 52 foreign female citizens also entered into marriage.

The strengthening of the family unit is supported by the provision of housing. Last year, 531 young families received housing, and 868 large families became owners of their own housing.

Population census data from 2019 shows that 316,364 families live in the Vitebsk region. Most families consist of two people (52.1%), followed by families of three (26.8%), four (14.9%), and families with five or more members (6.2%).

Interestingly, 129,000 families have children under 18 years of age. Most of them (61.7%) raise one child, 30.9% raise two, 6.0% raise three, and 1.1% and 0.3% of families have four and five or more children, respectively.

The region is also home to 88.9 thousand married couples without children, 92.8 thousand with children, 24.9 thousand with and without children, 64.7 thousand single mothers, 6.3 thousand families where mothers raise children with parents, 12 thousand single fathers, and other family structures.
