Vitebsk Regional Museum of Local Lore will prepare an online project for the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus
"Museum Calendar" is the name of a new online project by the regional museum of local lore, dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus from the Nazi invaders and the 1050th anniversary of Vitebsk.
As explained at the VOKM, the "Museum Calendar" involves a series of publications that will tell about the most interesting and significant exhibits stored in the museum's collections, as well as about items that are rarely displayed at exhibitions.
For many decades, the museum of local lore has been a carrier of historical memory about the feat of the Belarusian people during the Great Patriotic War. It is one of the largest repositories of artifacts related to the events of the war period. The first of them arrived as early as August 1944. The VOKM collections house personal belongings of Heroes of the Soviet Union Pyotr Masherov, Fyodor Blokhin, Minay Shmeryov, and others, as well as awards, documents, and photographs of participants in the partisan and underground movement, soldiers of the Red Army who took part in the defense and liberation of the Vitebsk region, materials from the occupation authorities, items transferred by search groups, and much more. The permanent exhibition in the town hall is dedicated to the events of the Great Patriotic War in the Vitebsk region. It was created in 1994 and modernized in 2020.
Another exhibition, "In Memory of the Patriots of Vitebsk Region," is the only museum in Belarus and the post-Soviet space located in the basements of the former Nazi SD prison, where thousands of Soviet patriots were brutally tortured during the Great Patriotic War. The conditions and inscriptions on the walls made by the prisoners have been recreated in the cells.
