The Vitebsk region media center discussed the 2023 admission campaign
Those planning to pursue secondary vocational or vocational-technical education still have time to think, while those applying for targeted training should hurry. The peculiarities of the 2023 admission campaign, its timelines, enrollment plans, and new specialties in universities and colleges were discussed at a press conference organized by the Vitebsk Region Media Center in conjunction with the Minsk Press House.
Dmitry Khoma, Head of the Main Department for Education of the Regional Executive Committee, noted that an important stage has been completed: centralized exams were held with high quality in the Vitebsk region. We remind you that the scores obtained in these exams, according to the new rules, will be taken into account when submitting documents to universities along with the results of the centralized testing. In the main period for the centralized exam in Russian (Belarusian) language, 5396 people took the exam, and for the elective subject – 5389. Mathematics was the most popular subject among graduates of the Vitebsk region, chosen by 2062 people. According to Dmitry Khoma, it was somewhat unexpected that many wanted to take biology – 1059 people chose it. For comparison, the exams in the subjects that follow in this conditional rating – English language and History of Belarus – were taken by 587 and 573 people, respectively.
One might say that the admission campaign lies ahead for yesterday's graduates. But in reality, it has already started long ago. Essentially, it was opened by the regional and final stages of the republican subject Olympiads, as well as Olympiads held in the 2022/23 academic year at universities. Talented students who became winners of these competitions now have benefits for admission, so many applicants only need to submit their documents to the admissions committee to become students.
For example, Yuri Romanovsky, Rector of PSU named after Euphrosyne of Polotsk, said that 54 schoolchildren received diplomas at their university Olympiads. They will be able to submit documents to the university in early June, simultaneously with those who plan to study under targeted training agreements. More than 60 winners of Olympiads held at the medical university have already received invitations to become students in March, reported Alina Shchupakova, First Vice-Rector of VGMU. A considerable number of such talented applicants are also expected at VSU named after P. Masherov this year.
In 2023, the opportunities for obtaining higher education through targeted recruitment have also expanded. The key here is not to miss the document submission deadline: from June 1 to June 5 (the certificate must be submitted to the admissions committee by June 15).
Dmitry Khoma noted that the education system strives to track the needs of the economy and make appropriate changes to the personnel training structure. Taking into account the needs of customers, new in-demand specialties are being introduced in both universities and colleges of the Vitebsk region. For example, in 2023, new programs will appear at VSU named after P. Masherov ("microbiology" and "socio-pedagogical and psychological education") and PSU named after Euphrosyne of Polotsk ("graphic design and multimedia design" and "business administration"). "Vitebskiye Vesti" has previously reported on new offerings at the secondary vocational education level. There will also be changes in vocational-technical education. Students will be offered qualifications such as "stove setter" (Orsha State Polytechnic College), "body repairman" (Vitebsk State Technical College), "track fitter" (Vitebsk State Agrarian-Technical College), "forester" (Lepel State Agrarian-Technical College), "rolling stock repair fitter" (Novopolotsk State Polytechnic College).
Representatives of all five state universities in our region and heads of several colleges in Vitebsk and Orsha, during a press conference, detailed the advantages and opportunities of specific educational institutions. This allowed us to showcase the potential of the Dvina region in personnel training to residents of different regions of Belarus, as anyone could join the event online.
