Spirituality

There are 14 religious communities in the Verkhnedvinsk district, representing 3 denominations, including 8 Orthodox, 2 Roman Catholic, 3 Evangelical Christians of Faith, and 1 Evangelical Christian Baptists. Of the 23 existing places of worship, 3 are architectural monuments and are protected by the state.

Christmas festivals are held in the district, with representatives of different denominations participating.

During the Christmas and New Year holidays, charity events are held with the participation of heads of departments and services of the district executive committee, organizations and enterprises, public associations, and clergy.

Every year, Epiphany bathing in the Jordan, organized on the reservoir of Verkhnedvinsk, is gaining increasing popularity among the residents of the district.

Clergy take an active part in district festivals. It has become traditional to invite Orthodox and Catholic clergy (as representatives of the most numerous denominations in the district) to agricultural festivals: "Zasevki" (sowing), "Zazhinki" (reaping), "Dozhinki" (harvest completion), days of workers of the agricultural and processing industry, etc.

The "Day of Family, Love and Fidelity" has become a tradition, held on July 8 in the agro-town of Sarya, Verkhnedvinsk district. Young families, pilgrims from the Verkhnedvinsk district and deaneries of the Polotsk diocese strive to visit the Holy Assumption Church, touch the sculpture of Saints Peter and Fevronia, and receive the blessing of Archbishop Theodosius of Polotsk and Glubokoye.

Twice a year (in February and August), days of remembrance are held for the Rositsa priests Antoni Leshchevich and Yury Kashyro, who were canonized by the Catholic Church for their feat in the name of faith. During the Great Patriotic War, they met a martyr's death along with their parishioners, although the Nazis offered them to spare their lives. Pilgrims from Belarus, near and far abroad go to the Rositsa Holy Trinity Church to honor the memory of the martyrs.

The District Executive Committee holds meetings with clergy and heads of religious communities of the district to discuss socio-economic situation in the district, compliance with religious legislation, issues of combating crime, alcoholism, fire and demographic safety, and other matters.
