The district has extensive forest resources. The total stock of forest timber is 196.1 thousand cubic meters per year. Forests occupy an area of 90.2 thousand hectares – more than 40 percent of the territory of Verkhnedvinsk region.

In terms of river network density, the district is among the first in the Republic of Belarus. The Western Dvina River flows here with numerous tributaries. Of the 30 lakes, the largest – Osveyskoye – is the second largest in Belarus by size, with the largest island in the country and an area of 5.3 thousand hectares.

Agriculture plays a leading role in the economy of the district, employing about 3 thousand people. Verkhnedvinsk district holds leading positions in the Vitebsk region in the production of milk, grain, fodder procurement, and flax cultivation.
